## The Founding Story My first college class had over 2,000 students. The class was so big that the lecture was held in the largest auditorium on campus, and I could barely see the professor's face. Later, I became a tutor teaching the same course. Each week, I met with a small group of students and we worked through concepts together. Often, the most important moments were not when I explained something, but when a student paused, reconsidered their assumptions, and arrived at an understanding themselves. Those moments were only possible because the group was small enough that I could track each student's thinking: catch the misconceptions early, ask the right follow-up question, and give them the space to work through it. But most students never get that experience. Resources are finite, office hours are limited, and 1:1 attention doesn't scale. The students in my tutoring group had one hour a week. Others in that lecture hall had far less. We started Pensive because we believe that, for the first time, personalized learning is possible at scale. But scale alone isn't enough. The rise of generative AI has made it easier than ever for students to outsource their thinking entirely. The risk isn't just that students get wrong answers. It's that they stop wrestling with questions at all. > To be pensive means to reflect, to question, and to think deeply before moving forward. In an age of instant answers, that's what we exist to protect. ## Giving Faculty Their Time Back To build the next generation of thoughtful learners, we knew we needed to start by partnering with faculty. Instructors are the best in their fields. They are the architects of their courses, and they understand better than anyone how students learn in their discipline. We didn't want to replace that. We wanted to amplify it. The truth is, as class sizes grow and resources shrink, instructors are being forced to trade mentorship for paperwork. Grading should be an extension of your teaching, not a chore that eats your weekends. We built our AI-assisted grading platform to fix that. Instead of spending Sunday nights behind a screen, instructors can get back to what they actually joined this profession to do: meet with students, lead research, and offer the kind of high-level support only a human can provide. During our closed beta, Pensive has been used by over **1,000 instructors** and **100+ institutions** to grade over **3 million questions**. At **UC Berkeley**, a 1,000-student Data Science course used the time saved to launch human-led group tutoring for the first time. At **Columbia University**, a math course enabled a course-aligned AI tutor that handled tens of thousands of student questions while maintaining strict academic rigor. ## Opening up Pensive & The Raise We are excited to announce that Pensive is now open to all instructors, and that we have raised $6.8M in seed funding. This investment is a commitment to the future of the classroom. We are doubling down on features that foster deep learning, critical thinking, and stronger connections between instructors and students. Grading is just the beginning. Our long-term vision is a platform that gives every student the kind of personalized, thoughtful support that I was lucky enough to experience as a tutor, and that most students never get. Our round was led by Mayfield, with participation from Reach Capital, Anti Fund, Sequoia Capital scout fund, a16z scout fund, Bass Ventures, Vela Partners, Vlad Tenev (co-founder & CEO of Robinhood), Karim Atiyeh (co-founder & CTO of Ramp), the founders of Gradescope, and many others who believe deeply in this mission. None of this would have been possible without the thousands of instructors who co-built Pensive with us, through countless product iterations and candid conversations about what is actually happening in their classrooms.
